The art of hanging art

I often remind my children ”you need to know the rules before you break them”. Hanging art was a mystery until I went to design school, and learned that there were formulas - like math formulas!

Where

Don’t rush with your drill or hammer. Taking time to place your art will actually save you time and unnecessary holes. This is where the formula kicks in: the center of the artwork or collection of artworks should be around 150cm (60 inches) above the floor or 15cm (6 inches) above a piece of furniture. That is the guideline so that one can fully appreciate the art at eye level. Then, depending on ceiling height, and other elements such as lighting, you can move around the 150cm line.

Why

You visit an art gallery and fall in love with a piece. On a bare white wall, with optimal lighting, the artwork is under the spotlight. When you go back home, your newly acquired piece will have to interact with your private space and other collections. Asking the question “why” will guide you to find the best place in your home. I like to create exciting conversations between various elements such as colors, shapes, and texture. Art has the power to touch us emotionally.

When

You worked out the hanging distance from the floor and chose a spot where your art can tell the story together with its surroundings. Are you ready to hang? Just wait for a few more days. Lean the art against the wall and as you go about your day, observe the emotion your art piece arouses every time you see it. If it feels right, then you’re ready to drill. Once in a while, try moving your art around your home and you’ll be surprised how changing perspective sparks a new conversation.
